URBAN CANOPY - Black & White
Artist: David Katzenstein
Urban Canopy is a collection that explores the multifarious beauty of nature within the urban setting of New York City. The collection is divided into two volumes, color and black & white, and the interpretation of nature varies greatly between the two visual approaches. The photographs created for this series are from various park locations throughout the city. By omitting all sense of ‘city’ the viewer could find himself in a distant forest. The perspective is often looking almost straight up, creating a sense of special freedom. Two formats, square and rectangle, are used to create the series, and they give different spatial information. The square format lends itself to a more personal and confined viewpoint, and the rectangle generally allows for a broader expanse of nature. The full body of work from which this collection was selected encompasses all seasons and when viewed in larger prints creates a bountiful world of natural beauty, while at the same time existing in the heart of one of the largest metropolises in the world.
